Glen Eden Farms Wins Big – and We’re Over the Moon!

We’re stoked to share that our awesome hosts here at Glen Eden Farms, Susannah and Mark Guscott, have taken out the Greater Wellington Ballance Farm Environment Award! From top-notch farming to looking after the land and sky, they’re true legends — and we’re proud as to be part of the team bringing stargazing and sustainability together in the Wairarapa.

Here at Star Safari, we often talk about how lucky we are to look up at one of the darkest, clearest skies in New Zealand — but we’re equally lucky to look around and see the extraordinary land that surrounds us.

We’re very proud to share the news that our business partners and hosts, Susannah and Mark Guscott of Glen Eden Farms, have won the Greater Wellington Ballance Farm Environment Award!

Glen Eden Farms, located in beautiful Ponatahi, Wairarapa, is much more than just the home of Star Safari. It’s a living, thriving example of what future-focused, sustainable farming looks like in Aotearoa. Over the past 20 years, Susannah and Mark have transformed the 1434-hectare (1270ha effective) family farm into a diversified powerhouse — spanning sheep, beef, arable farming, carbon initiatives, and tourism — all while enhancing biodiversity and caring for the whenua.

Tradition and innovation

Mark is the fifth generation to farm this land, and together with his Māori whakapapa and European roots, he and Susannah bring a deep, intergenerational understanding of stewardship to their work.

The judges praised the Guscotts for their strategic, structured approach to growth and succession and their willingness to challenge the status quo. Their diversified business model, which includes high-end accommodation (at Whitimanuka) and stargazing tours in partnership with us at Star Safari, shows a truly resilient, forward-thinking mindset.

Here are some photos of Star Safari on Glen Eden Farms starting with when we first walked up the hill to decide on the location of our observatories.

Sustainability

Sustainability is not just a buzzword at Glen Eden — it’s how things are done. From smart grazing and mixed planting to looking after the soil and using water wisely, Susannah and Mark are all about farming that gives back to the land.

They’ve planted along waterways, built a six-hectare wetland, and protected 18 hectares of native bush under QEII covenant.

And then there’s the night sky — hosting Star Safari means they’re helping protect one of Aotearoa’s best spots for stargazing. We’re very excited to be part of it. Their kaitiakitanga, smarts, and big-hearted approach make Glen Eden something truly special.

Kia ora, congratulations, Susannah and Mark. Your legacy is shining brightly.
